How does SJM do it? How are we on the 5th book and it’s still so gripping, witty and intense! This book takes you on such an emotional roller coaster ride, laugh-crying, crying-crying, angry and just plain shocked ( I often talk out loud when reading these books – it really entertains my husband).

***Disclaimer – please don’t read this review if you have not read book 1-4***

After the events of Queen of Shadows you would expect Aelin to finally catch a break, well that’s not SJM’s style. Aelin and her court travel to Terrasen to finally claim her throne. As usual things don’t go quite as planned sending Aelin and her friends on a new adventure as she tries to figure out riddles from King’s and Queen’s long dead while trying to raise an army to stand against Morath.

This book is told from many other characters points of view not mainly Aelin’s as in the previous books. This adds so much more to the story especially when it comes to all the surprises that Aelin has in store for all of her friends. I love all of the characters, they are funny, smart and cunning and all fit so well together(even the new ones). The only character that annoyed me in this book was Aedion (who I used to love) but I am hoping he will redeem himself in the next book. Mannon, who is my favorite character, also didn’t impress me much in this book, she didn’t seem to have her usual level of badass and ruthlessness so I wasn’t too happy with her character development. I must say that the absence of Chaol was a nice break too, I loved him in book 1 & 2 but from the end of book 2 on wards he became my most hated character.

Overall this story is truly amazing, there are so many plot twists that you don’t see coming. There are moments that break your heart and others that lift your spirits. It lays an exciting foundation for the last 2 books and I can’t wait to see where the story goes. This book has done some major maneuvering  of the different players in this centuries long game and Aelin discovering her destiny sets quite the tone of what’s to come (but it is SJM so who knows). The ending promises an epic next 2 novels and I can’t wait to read them!

So if you haven’t started this series just do it! You won’t regret it.

XOXO Until next time
